Modelling Urban Water

We execute projects worldwide, to provide engineering decision making support with the use of customized advanced modelling tools and methods.

Examples of fields of application are water resource recovery facility (WRRF) design and upgrade, real-time control (RTC), optimization, cost reduction (energy and chemicals), operators training.

A unique capacity consists of the implementation and use of dynamic models for the integrated urban wastewater system, comprising the catchment/sewer system, the WRRF and the receiving water. Such models can be used to evaluate the design of measures in the whole system (e.g. source control, green infrastructure, retention volumes, integrated RTC, plant upgrade, in-stream aeration) and evaluate them based not only on effluent quality, but also on the resulting receiving water quality and operating costs.

The models that we use are not limited to standard water quality constituents, but can include the fate of micropollutants and GHG emissions.

Integrated water quality modelling provides essential support to comply with the EU WFD, and to the production of the Integrated Urban Wastewater Management Plans required by the new EU UWWTD.

Specific methods applied to the developed models include sensitivity and uncertainty analysis with Monte Carlo simulation and long-term simulations with statistical evaluation.

We operate for public entities, frequently in association or as subcontractor of main consulting firms, providing specific competence and qualifications. We also participate to research projects.

We work with both SUMO and WEST process simulators.
